The Bachelor Pad

A shower room in a city centre apartment

The brief called for a modern shower room, with a cool city centre apartment vibe. We wanted to give the impression of a "walk-in" shower area with more bathroom space indicated leading out of shot.

We also wanted to use the set for close-up images of the products to get the maximum use from the set to show off all the procucts and use the imagery in more than one brochure.

The Attic

An en-suite shower room in an attic

The brief was for a whole shower room with a 1200x900mm shower tray with screen, tiled walls and floor, a sloping roof to indicate an secondary or en-suite shower room in an attic, to demonstrate the adjustable nature of the client's range of showers for more confined or awkward installations.

Again, we shot multiple products to get the best use and value from the set.

Large flat sets for a brochure

These images were photographed for a specific showering catalogue, there were three large flat walls; a black slate effect porcelain tiled wall, a grey and brown stone effect ceramic tiled wall and a (genuine) marble tiled wall.

The images were shot to fit around a specific layout and so we had to work hand-in-hand with the designer to ensure that each image fitted in the catalogue layout to allow for the overlay of text.

Every image had to be shot with and without water, to maximise the potential future use in catalogues and on the internet, helping the client to get their money's worth!

This set of images shows just 8 different product set-ups, with and without water, from a catalogue production that displayed 40 such set-ups.

It seems like only yesterday that travertine and polished slate were the bee's knees!

Showering sets for 2020 publicity

A few updates for forthcoming literature

Two simple flat walls, one grey tiles and grout, one white, to display updated showering products and new digital shower controls (how cool is that!). Once again, these were photographed with special attention to empty, plain areas for the designer to be able to overlay type on.

A few updates for forthcoming use; both printed and on social media.

The client supplied tiles to match similar existing style. The brief was for bright bold imagery showing off new products in new colours and brushed finishes. Some of the images were shot with differing depths-of-field to use either as stand-alone images, or out-of-focus for text placement.

Basins

To showcase taps and mixers

The backbone of any bathroom brassware catalogue is the basin shot.

I usually make the sets look as realistic as possible so the customers believe they too can have a bathroom like they see in the photographs.

This means I install the taps and mixers as per fitting instructions, and plumb then in so that the water they see running out of the spout is what they will actually get and not some CGI bollocks.

To complement any bathroom, accessories are essential, so here are a few small close-up shots.

Standard product shots

Simple, pure, accurate product photography

Just in case you hadn't noticed, I specialise in shiney things!

Objects with lots of polished surfaces which reflect everything they see.

My job is to make the products look gorgeous without evil and ugly reflections.

Some objects have special finishes and need very different lighting to highlight this. Other objects need a far more technical approach so that specifiers and installers know exactly which spare item to order. Whilst it is not the most glamourous area of photography it is one that needs just as much care and attention to create clean, efficient results.

Accuracy is everything.

Creative product shots

A bit more funky, arty, atmospheric

I am often asked by clients to photograph new products in such a way as to either obscure the product as it hasn't been launched yet - to make "teaser" images for press releases, or to accentuate product features and design, or to highlight their aesthetics.

I also shoot for specific brochure page layouts so that they can have text and graphics overlaying the images, working hand-in-hand with an Art Director or graphic designer to ensure we can create images they want.

Product cut-aways

What is inside a tap? How is it built and assembled? Well now you know.

These images of the tap were used both statically as well as compiled into a animation that faded between each stage of asembly.

The cut-away of the valve was supplied in a multiple layer native photoshop file so that the designer sould select the level of transparency to suit their needs.

Salt corrosion testing

Images of both the client's and a competitor's products after they had been subjected to independent high-pressure salt corrosion testing.

This is done for two reasons - frequent quality control testing to ensure that product maintains a high production standard as well as benchmarking against competitor's products. To ensure accuracy, there was no image post-procesing other than stripping away the background for clarity.

Some more creative product shots

Shallow depth of field, atmospheric teasers images.

Using a macro lens and a wide aperture to a shallow depth of field, these images are used as atmospheric teasers to introduce a new traditional range of bathroom mixers without actually revealing the entire product.

The designer supplied the brochure layouts where the images were used (in low resolution).

Complete house renovation

Soon after the keys were handed over I was asked to photograph this beautiful period house that had undergone a total resoration.

The garden was still full of rubble and cement mixers but the interior was stunningly well finished. I had to be in and out in about 2 hours, so it was just a camera, a couple of wide angle lenses and a tripod, available light only, making sure I didn't scratch or knock anything.

New corporate meeting room and training facility

A client had a new display and training facility built, and needed it documenting.

As always there was little time, not much control over the available lighting, no room to work, and please don't make a mess!

Photographing product displays in London

On location in central London, photographing product displays for PR use.

The lighting was challenging, a mix of daylight (5000-6000K) and tungsten (3000K), so I took studio lighting and reflectors to mitigate these issues.

Also, I shot almost everything using focus stacking - a technique where multiple images are taken at different focus points to enable the highest quality output with the maximum depth of field - ie: everything in focus, if necessary.

Amy Finnimore

A very professional model

The brief called for a set of images that are clean, tasteful and sophisticated.

Amy Finnimore was an absolute joy to work with, so very professional, full of suggestions and ideas. A couple of these images rank amongst some of the very best I have ever done, in my humble opinion.

Never work with children or animals, apparently

A client volunteered her two daughters for this shoot.

Working with children I find that you have to be quick, confident yet gentle.

You need to create a comfortable atmosphere so that their delight and innocence shines. I believe we caught it here. I am especially pleased with the one photo of the child looking up at her mum with such love and happiness.

Brochure covers and corporate shots

Again, clients and their families going above and beyond the call of duty!

The woman in the bath was the marketing manager who volunteered to jump into a bath display in a showroom after hours. The two children brushing their teeth, daughters of the Export manager, were also shot after hours in a showroom, well past their bedtime.

Both the woman in the bath and the children brushing their teeth were for brochure covers.

And finally Mr Ji Williams, the Managing Director of VADO in their newly built Hydologic Studio - for demonstrating products; their manufacture, installation, features and benefits.

Close-up studio photography with hand models

The first pair of images were to show the benefits of an infra-red operted mixer.

The second was for a product which caught any water running down the showerhose to keep the zone under a bath protected from water ingress.

The third set was for a brochure cover, needing space for text and logos on a brochure cover.
